Sofia Maldonado’s Times Square mural reminds me of women I know. It reminds me of Oaktown’s 357 and J.J. Fad, the sassy lady rappers whose style I admired as a little girl.

Maldonado’s mural, depicting Black and Latino women with long fingernails, wearing leggings, skimpy tops, hoop earrings and lip gloss, has been criticized for demeaning women of color. I even got an email from a black professionals group asking folks to come out and protest in front of the mural because it made Black and Latino women look like “prostitutes, hoes and sluts.”

Why is it that these bright and fanciful images inspire such shame? There are crotch shots in the underwear ads American Eagle Outfitters broadcasts on their 15,000 square foot LED display around the corner! Crotch shots, people! But, those REAL women are white and these DRAWN women are women of color.

Perhaps the Black women in business suits who find this mural so offensive would like to forget the long fingernails and freeze updo they wore to their prom? Perhaps. Or maybe they resent the celebration of “round the way girls” – who, I guess, aren’t supposed to be considered beautiful or worth celebrating.

I always wonder who the models on these do-rags covers are. They don’t look like models (not that anything’s wrong with that). They have to be relatives of the do-rag manufacturers, right??

According to the UK’s Sun, Jourdan Dunn’s boyfriend, and father of her two-month-old son, has been sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison. The 20-year-old, also named Jordan (last name Cummings) was charged with possession of cocaine and intent to supply.

Several online sources say the two Jordan’s have been together for five years. That would mean this has been the boy in her life since she was 15 and not a famous model.

You have to wonder what pressures a 17-year-old boy must feel when his girlfriend is suddenly making hundreds of thousands of dollars for a day’s work. Or, who knows, maybe he was just bad news.

Kudos to Stacey McBride-Irby, a mother of two, and 12-year Barbie designer. She’s behind Mattel’s new “So In Style” (S.I.S.), a line of dolls that has my grown ass thoroughly excited.

There’s been some buzz about these dolls for a while, and Mattel just announced the line’s official launch. McBride-Irby wanted to create a line of dolls that her daughter could see herself in and the result is definitely more than just a black Barbie doll.

I always hated how black Barbie was just Barbie dipped in chocolate. Same. Exact. Face. The S.I.S. dolls have fuller lips, wider noses, and different skin tones and hair textures. Grace, the main S.I.S. doll, is brown, while her besties Trichelle and Kara are light and dark-skinned. The girls each have a little sister who looks up to them. Each of their sisters is also another shade of black (gasp!) with the line representing all the beautiful colors we come in.

There’s even a Kara hair doll made with curly hair that can be straightened, a salon chair and yes – some extra hair!

Mariah Carey and husband Nick Cannon stepped out a few days ago and something was very different yet very familiar about Mariah.

Mariah’s back to rocking the same darker curly hair she had when she released her debut album, Mariah Carey. The tight black dress is also a throwback look. Did she do it “for the nostalgia?” (one of her catch phrases)

I’m hoping she’ll keep this look for all of her appearances promoting Confessions of an Imperfect Angel. And speaking of her promo appearances, Mariah will be sitting down with Oprah on September 18 during her first week back!

Solange has been Twittering a lot about being over the whole hair thing.

She debuted her new bald ‘do out and about in Cali this week.

No strong feelings either way about this one. I just think I’d like it better died a bright color, even if people would say she bit Amber Rose.

UPDATE: Solange can’t believe she’s a bigger Twitter trending topic than Iran. She has a point. She also said she wasn’t trying to have a “style” she was just tired of spending so much time and money on hair.

If the dates on the paparazzi shots are correct, Solange slapped on a wig for an event the same night this photo was taken. So, she’s still looking to shake it up on occasion.

Is It Just Us, Or Was Lady Gaga’s Influence All Over Couture? – Style.com

It’s been a while since a new pop artist hit as hard as Lady Gaga. Her style gets as much press as her music and now it looks like she’s had a major influence on fashion.

The latest collections from Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy, Christian Lacroix and Chanel all had looks that could of come right out of Gaga’s closet.

Check out this pants-less look Gaultier. It screams Gaga!

For many of us, the clothes in Vogue are more aspirational than attainable. That changes this month with a budget friendly issue featuring a new “Steal of the Month” feature and an “all items under $500″ section.

This comes on the heels of news that for the first half of this year, Elle surpassed Vogue in ad pages for the first time in 24 years.

With Jimmy Choo doing a line for H&M and Marc Jacobs announcing his back-to-school, under $200 “Don’t Miss the Marc” collection it’s not surprising even the too fab Ms. Wintour has gotten on the cheap chic bandwagon.

Fashionista says creative differences Patricia Field and Sarah Jessica Parker may lead to – gasp! – someone else styling the Sex and the City sequel.

SexAndTheCityLadies

According to the blog, SJP is getting all socially conscious and would like her character’s wardrobe to reflect the current recession and Patricia Field ain’t havin’ it.

I guess I get SJP’s point, but Carrie’s over-the-top fabulousness is one of the few main reasons I’m checking this movie out!

Jennifer Lopez, who was one of the first celebs to do the clothing line thing, launched Sweetface, the high-end answer to her JLo brand, in 2003. The line had a couple of good years, but news came today that production on Sweetface has ended.

JLoSweetface

Sweetface’s spring line, already in stores, will be the last. This is JLo’s third line to launch big and hyped and later slink away – at least from US stores. First the JLo brand was pulled from U.S. racks then justsweet, affordable junior-esque line that replaced JLo, was also pulled.

According to reports, JLo is still sold in 40 other countries, but if you don’t want to pay a fortune in shipping or travel fees and, for some strange reason, are looking to cop some of Lopez’s fashions, you should be able to find several Sweetface pieces online at majorly discounted prices.

I found this “belted collar coat,” which is really just a dress, on Revolve Clothing.

It was originally $492.00 and is on sale for $123.00.
